We're going to blog?! Cool!!

Welcome to Mrs. Holland's History Blog. Okay STMA techie students.... what is a blog and how will we use it in the classroom? Well, in short, a blog is a nickname for a web log. We will be using it as an online forum for discussion of classroom topics. The cool part of a blog is that it invites the entire class to join in on your discussion! It's kind of like writing on a Facebook wall!

Communicating on the internet is something that today's students are very familiar with, so this should be a breeze for you! Here is an example of how blogging will work in our class....Every Monday I will post a question about the topic we are covering. For example, I might post a question about your thoughts on the leadership style of George Washington in the classroom blog. Students will then access the blog from home or any computer lab at school and post your opinions or comments. Your first post must always be at least one paragraph, all responses for the week after that can be as long or short as you want. A discussion will soon follow as you are encouraged to reply to other students postings. Don't worry... I can moderate all of the comments before they are actually posted so nobody's feelings will be hurt. You are required to respond to each weeks blog question by Friday of that week.

Moderating of comments is done very easily in Mrs. Holland's school e-mail.If you are worried about internet security and your privacy concerns, this can all be done anonymously if you use a nickname, username, or a number code assigned by the teacher. There is really no way an outsider can contact anybody participating in the blog discussion.

You are about to go where no other 8th grade history students have gone before!! Here is your very first question...
What are your thoughts and reactions to working with a blog this year in history class?
